Cumann Báire Naomh Colum Cille - Ar mbun 1986

CLG CUMANN BÁIRE NAOMH COLUM CILLE

A brief historical review

Naomh Colum Cille Hurling club was formed as a juvenile team in 1986 for the youth of Coalisland and Clonoe parishes. Henry McNally (Meenagh & Moortown) taught the first NCC hurlers the essential skills of the game and managed the team along with Liam Mulcahy (Tallow, Waterford). Brian McLernon (Magheramulkenny) acted as PRO and administrator. After a substantial period of thorough preparation in the fundamentals (ground hurling, doubling, blocking and hooking), NCC played its first game against Caoimhín Uí Loingsigh (Kevin Lynches) in St Patricks High School, Dungiven. The occasion was an Ulster Council sponsored initiative whereby new and floundering clubs spent a coaching weekend with the strong Ulster hurling clubs (a worthwhile venture that never was repeated and should have been). The Cilles scored one goal in an enjoyable first ever game. The first scorer was Paul Slater (Main St) and it came after a mighty goalmouth scramble that resembled a rugby scrum! This team hurled in the Tyrone u16 and minor league and Championship until its demise in 1988.

After a lapse of five years, members of the original youth team decided to resurrect the club in 1993 with Liam Mulcahy being a central senior figure to those efforts. The first Chairperson was Sean Quinn (Ardmore). The club have been in continual existence since then and many milestones have been passed with the most significant being the development and purchase of the first hurling ground in Tyrone in 2006 and 2008. On the field, the clubs first title arrived in 1994 with a Féile na nGael win but it took a long 12 years for the next success – and first championship breakthrough – with the u16s in 2005. Since then NCC have won every honour in Tyrone hurling with the exception of the Senior & Minor Hurling Championships. The senior team won the Intermediate championship in 2007 and 2008 and lifted the Armagh Division 2 league title in 2007
