CLG Naomh Colum Cille Hurling Notes (Scripted Tues 24 August 2010)

Seniors

NCC 1-19 Seamróga an tSratha Báin 2-12

Naomh Colum Cilles 2010 Tyrone Senior Hurling Championship campaign commenced on Tues night last (17 Aug) with a home game in Clochóg against the Shamrocks of Strabane. League form went out the window in this tussle as both sides attacked from the start and a high scoring, entertaining game was the result.

The Cilles were behind 2-8 to 0-11 at half-time and rattled. Shamrocks were playing direct hurling and two goals from Gary 'Spud McGettigan off high balls lashed into the edge of the square unnerved the black and red.

A sharp half-time pep talk from NCC manager, Corkonian Ciaran Moloney seemed to settle the side and on the restart the Cilles hurled with much more purpose and intent. A well taken goal from senior c'ship debutant Emmett Kelly in the 40th minute was the crucial score that nosed the Cilles ahead and despite a host of Shamrocks wides, NCC managed to keep the lead to the final whistle.

A remarkable statistic from the game was the Cilles tally of 1-17 from open play, with many delightful scores being taken. The score of the game was the 11th point just before halftime. A precise puck out from Paul Maguire found Rory Ó Néill who fielded languidly and despatched a bullet like pass to Paul Mór Ó Néill. The Power plucked  the ball from the air 40m out on the Meenagh sideline and in one quick movement lobbed the sliothar over his shoulder and over the bar for a delightfully crafted score.

Foireann: P Maguire, C Brady, D Murphy, P Corr, R (D) O'Neill, M O'Gorman, KB Corrigan, S McKiver (0-5,2f), J Connolly, S O'Hagan (0-3, 1f), R (G) O'Neill, B (R) Taggart, E Kelly (1-1), P Ó Néill (0-3), Ro O'Neill (0-4).  Fir Ionaid: Joe O Neill (0-1) for C Brady, Collie Connolly (0-1) for B Taggart

The game against Gaeil na Ceapaí on Sat  21 Aug did not go ahead.

The next game up is this Sat evening 28 Aug against the reigning County Senior Champions Eoghan Ruadh, Dún Geanainn. The game is in Ó Néill Park and throw-in time is 6pm.

Minors

Heartiest congratulations to the Tyrone Minor Hurlers and their management team on their terrific 2-16 to 1-13 All Ireland victory over Donegal at Casement Park, Belfast on Sunday last (22 Aug). It was a proud day for the Cilles as Seán Kelly from Magheramulkenny captained the side valiantly from full back, ably assisted by KB Corrigan in midfield, Collie Connoly in corner forward and young Caolan Devlin who came on during the second half in the forwards. This makes up for the disappointment of losing last years title and is Tyrone's first U18 All Ireland Hurling title since the late 80's.

On the club front, the NCC minors played hosted to Carmen the following night at Clochóg (Mon 23 Aug) in the first league game of the season and were defeated 3-8 to 1-7. The next game is this Fri evening at 7pm away to Dungannon.
